Barry Hawkins soars past Neil Robertson at the World Grand Prix as Liang edges out Perry

Barry Hawkins will take on Liang Wenbo in the Semi-Finals of the 2017 World Grand Prix after an impressive 4-2 victory over Neil Robertson at the Preston Guild Hall on Thursday night.
The Hawk, who overcame Judd Trump 4-1 earlier in the day, made breaks of 81 and 85 on the way to booking his place in the Last Four of a ranking event for the third time this season.
Hawkins swooped with a swift 81 in the opening frame after Robertson left a free ball when under-hitting his attempted safety shot, but the Australian hit back in style with a neat run of 70 to quickly levels things up.
However, despite being pegged back to 56-39 from 56-18 in front, a 35-minute long third frame eventually saw Hawkins regain his lead on the blue, before a run of 45 helped the Ditton cueist double his advantage.
Robertson, who completed a 4-1 rout of Ronnie O’Sullivan in the second round, kept his hopes alive by clearing with 51 to the pink in a frame of missed chances by both players, but the world number 12 responded with 85 in the next to secure his place in the semis.
Hawkins sets up a showdown with fellow left-hander Liang, who prevailed a 4-3 winner after a nail-biting decider with Joe Perry.
Following a scrappy start to the match from both players, a run of 52 was eventually enough for Liang to draw first blood, but Perry responded well with breaks of 46 and 45 to level.
English Open winner Liang then crashed in a wonderful 109 clearance to the pink to regain his lead, but was pegged back once again as his opponent knocked in 72.
The standard continued to soar as a magnificent total clearance of 129 from Liang cancelled out by a wonderful 122 dish to the pink by Perry to force a decider.
Both players had chances with the Chinese cueist’s 40 being seen and raised by the man from Cambridge’s contribution of 43.
However, following a missed opportunity from Perry, Liang pounced by clearing to the pink to advance to Friday’s semi-finals.
