Two lanes are closed and traffic is queuing on the southbound M6 after a four-vehicle smash.
Lanes two and three have been closed between junctions 33 and 32 after a Vauxhall Insignia crashed into the central reservation, say police.
It is then believed that further vehicles then collided with the first car, they added.
Drivers have been suffering long delays following the accident which happened at around 5.30am.
Police have confirmed that a woman was taken to Royal Preston Hospital with non-life changing injuries.
A spokesman for NW Motorway Police said: “Four vehicles were involved [in the crash] they will be moved as soon as fire and ambulance services have finished working in the area."
