A View of Preston from Penwortham Hill c.1820

This exhibition is on now, and until 30 January 2017. Lose yourself in this unique painting of Preston on the cusp of change – a picturesque harvest scene in the foreground contrasts with the rapidly growing industrial town across the river. Thanks to a public donations campaign led by the Friends of the Harris, this landscape by John Jenkinson has been expertly conserved at Lancashire Conservation Studios and we are once again able to display it at its best. Look out for dramatic tall chimneys, windmills, traditional hay stooks, and features still recognisable in Preston today.

Find out too why we originally thought this painting was produced in 1821 but have now dated it a year earlier. OPENING HOURS Museum, Art Gallery & Library Mon 10am-5pm (11am Museum/Art Gallery) Tue 10am-5pm Wed 10am-5pm Thur 10am-5pm Fri 10am-5pm Sat 10am-5pm Sun 11am-4pm
